Night and Fog

Every time I watch Alain Resnais's film Night and Fog (1955) I am astounded by the detail and level of footage captured by the Nazis which documented their atrocities. More recently, when the photographs of Abu Ghraib prison abuses were released, I thought to myself "Why would anyone want to photographing themselves torturing another human being?"

Now, after the execution of Saddam Hussein I am again appalled that I can watch Saddam get fitted with his noose on CNN.com. Why am I able to do this? What possible good could come from me being able to watch Saddam's last moments before his execution?

I am so full of questions on why we as humans record the things we do, and what pleasure we get out of watching the suffering of others. I just don' t understand.

Should they have even killed me? How many deaths are going to be done in the name of Hussein now?

Of course, you can always join up with the people who believe the Holicaust and the moon landing were staged. Denial is fun sometimes.

And by 'me', I meant 'him'. Please stop analyzing me.

I can now report that according to the BBC there will be an investigation into how the video was released and who took it in the first place. More Info

I didn't watch the video however the description they have of it in this story is quite disturbing indeed.

I also agree that he should not have been put to death. I don't agree with the death penalty for any reason. It doesn't work as a deterrent and doesn't really accomplish anything.

Who knows what will come of this but I hope we can learn something aout ourselves and how we relate to each other in this conflicting time.
